In Motion: The African American Migration Experience
California African American Museum [CAAM]
600 State Drive, Exposition Park
Los Angeles, CA 90037
This exhibition, from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Studies in New York, presents a new interpretation of African American history, one that focuses on the self-motivated activities of peoples of African descent to remake themselves and their worlds. Of the defining migrations that formed and transformed African America, only the transatlantic slave trade, the domestic slave trades and the runaway journeys evoked by those trades were coerced; the others were voluntary movements of resourceful and creative men and women, risk-takers in an exploitative and hostile environment. Their survival skills, efficient networks and dynamic culture enabled them to thrive and spread, and to be at the very core of the settlement and development of the Americas. Their hopeful journeys changed not only their own world, but also the American political and socio-cultural landscape and the world at large.

Allensworth: 100 Years of the California Dream
California African American Museum [CAAM]
600 State Drive, Exposition Park
Los Angeles, CA 90037
Allensworth has been called a “monument to a dream”. The settlement, founded in 1908 by Col. Allen Allensworth, Prof. William Payne, minister Dr. W.H. Peck, miner J.W. Palmer and real estate agent Harry Mitchel through the California Colony and Home Promoting Association, did represent the dream of its namesake, “to show the world that the Negro can DO and BE everything that is expected of an intelligent citizenship.” It also symbolized the dream of African Americans across California and the U.S. for civic opportunity, the chance to create an ideal social enterprise free from the restrictions imposed during this troublesome period considered “the nadir” of race relations in America. The exhibition celebrating the centennial of Allensworth is a collaboration with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California African American Museum and the California Community Empowerment Foundation.

Brotherhood Crusade's Arts Against AIDS initiative
presents The Young and Evil @ Outfest

Director's Guild of America
7920 Sunset Blvd / DGA1
Los Angeles, CA 90046
4:30pm
Writer-Director Julian Breece makes a striking debut with THE YOUNG & EVIL, a dramatic short about a defiantly promiscuous young man who finds eros in self-destruction. Referencing the controversial 1930s novel of the same title, THE YOUNG & EVIL provides a chilling lens into how homophobia, faithlessness and longing miscolor the need for human connection. Shot in South Central Los Angeles by veteran cinematographer Carl Bartels, THE YOUNG & EVIL presents a unique and stylish vision. Pulsing with atmosphere, the film undulates between urban grit and haunting metaphor. With Breece's protagonist as our guide, we're ushered into a labyrinthine world of shadows, where touch equals salvation. An official program of The Brotherhood Crusade of Los Angeles (501c-3) and its arts against AIDS initiative. Produced by Aaliyah Williams (aaliyah.williams@gmail.com). USA (15min., 35mm)
