Honoring Top African American Male Scholar Athlete In The Nation

The National Alliance of African American Athletes (The Alliance) will present its 18th Annual Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Award at a Black Tie Gala February 21, 2009 at the Millennium Biltmore.  The Watkins Award has been the most prestigious award given to the top African American Male High School Scholar Athlete in the country since 1992. The finalists for the award, known as the “Elite Five” will fly to Los Angeles for Watkins Award weekend activities.  Watkins Award alumni attend numerous major colleges and 12 are active in the NFL during the 2008 season. Finalists are chosen based on their unweighted grade point average, their personal statements, extracurricular activities, community service, and letters of recommendation.  Each “Elite Five” winner will receive an award, a ring, and a dinner in his hometown.  The Pre-Gala Reception/Mixer will be attended by numerous local celebrities, sports industry leaders, business leaders and community activists.  Watkins Award Alumni will be in attendance including Chris Lewis (former member of the Arizona Cardinals, Stanford and Long Beach Poly High School), J.R. Lemon (Actor and former Oakland Raider), and other Watkins Alumni.  Athletes Advisory Chairman John Salley, Model/Actress Claudia Jordan, Comedian “Lazee” Lamont King and others, will be on hand to launch the drive toward the 2009 Watkins Award Event. 2008 Battle of the High School Marching Bands

Artist and Producer George Duke to Make Opening Remarks at the Fifth Annual Charity Event. The “Southern Show Style” marching band competition features seven finalists from across the United States; three hail locally from Los Angeles.  General admission tickets are available now for $10; group tickets are available for $8. Los Angeles high school finalists include Inglewood High School Marching Band (Inglewood, Calif./2006 winner/2007 competitor) – as well as Dominguez High Marching Band (Compton, Calif.) and Crenshaw High School (Los Angeles, Calif.), who returns to the event for the first time since 2006. Other finalists include Percy L. Julian High School (Chicago, Ill./2007 & 2006 competitor) and three schools who will compete in the event for the first time; Henrico High School (Richmond, Va.), Clifton J. Ozen Magnet High School (Beaumont, Tx.) and Martin Luther King, Jr. High School (Detroit, Mich.). A special 5th Anniversary first place trophy will be specially designed by renowned artist Ernie Barnes. This year’s opening speaker is the award winning and legendary artist and producer George Duke.  Duke has worked with headline artists including Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Barry Manilow and several others. More than 100 high school marching bands applied to compete in the 2008 Battle of the High School Marching Bands, which in 2007 raised more than $100,000 for The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

$90 Per Person - The cuisines of Asia are many and varied and Thai Food is one of the most popular.  Chef Eric has designed a class to show you how flavorful and fun it can be to cook this cuisine.  Chef Eric will tell you what ingredients to look for, where to shop and variations to the recipes.  In this class we will make Thai Style Shrimp Spring Rolls wrapped in Rice Paper with a Garlic Lime Dipping Sauce, Marinated Flank Steak with Chiles, Grilled Eggplant and Long Beans with Fish Sauce and Garlic, Authentic Pad Thai Noodles, Stir Fried Chicken and Vegetables with Green Curry Paste and Coconut Milk, Miang Gung (Thai Style Shrimp with Galangal and Coconut wrapped in Lettuce Leaves).  Come and taste the flavor with us!
