McCaw School Of Mines Fundraising Celebration Gala
Fiesta Henderson Hotel & Casino
Henderson, Nevada
6:00 pm
The McCaw School of Mines is an introduction to mining for elementary school students. It is the only mine in the country attached to a school. Though described as a museum, the McCaw School of Mines is actually more
of a hands-on experience. The McCaw School of Mines started out as a papier-mâché model of a mine tunnel built into the corner of a classroom. Shortly thereafter the Gordon McCaw Elementary School staff met, discussed the idea, and then decided to “think big”. As a result, in 1996 the McCaw School of Mines became a 4,500 square foot reality at the Gordon McCaw Elementary School in Henderson, Nevada. This annual fundraising gala is our main source of funding to keep our field trip destination available to every student/classroom who would like to tour the McCaw School of Mines no matter their economic situation. We provide the funds for the bus transportation as well as the gold each student pans. We strongly encourage any corporate sponsorship of student tours and invite you to contact us regarding attending our annual gala.

Jasmine Murrell, Possession of Fela Kuti
Pounder-Koné Artspace

Inspired by the revolutionary Nigerian icon Fela Kuti, this work is at once vibrant, dynamic, comedic, and damning. Murrell creates visual intersections between the brownstones of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Kuti’s Africa, challenging notions of space and time. Also gripping is the artist ’s critique of concepts of gender and sexuality in this sensual and visually stunning work.
